SZ reports 7 alcohol-related traffic fatalities since Jan.
            2019-02-21  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN has reported seven alcohol-related traffic accidents that killed seven people since January.

Among them, three deaths were related to pedestrians entering vehicle lanes, and lying or squatting in the road, while heavily intoxicated. Three other accidents were related to DUI and one was caused by a drunk e-bike rider.

Most of the accidents happened in the weeks during and around the Spring Festival holiday and in the wee hours, according to a police report.

“The three people who entered the lanes unconsciously and were killed by vehicles passing by were not accompanied by other people. As the light was dim, it was hard for the drivers to see them lying in the road,” Zhao Jide, a police officer with the Shenzhen Municipal Traffic Police Bureau, said in an interview.

On Feb. 3, one day before the Spring Festival Eve, a driver surnamed Zeng hit a pedestrian who was squatting in a motorist lane on Sungang Road. On Feb. 1, a man surnamed Xu, who was lying in the middle of Bagua Road in Futian District after getting very drunk, was run over by a car. On Feb. 15, a man surnamed Wang was lying in the lane of Binhe Boulevard when he was run over by a bus.

On Feb. 18, a man lying in Tangkai Road in Xili, Nanshan District, was lucky enough to be rescued by police before an accident happened. (Han Ximin)
